California Theatre of Performing Arts

PROJECT ONE

Project Purpose:

The subject for the first project was the California Theatre of Performing Arts website. The requirements for the first project was to redesign the website using the program Wix and create an abstract outlining the direction for the project. Each project requires an abstract containing a design brief, typography & colors, wireframe, and screenshots of both original and new websites.

Project Research:

It is the only Theater in California who still has the Wurlitzer model 216 organ in its original location whereas Riverside’s is in the lobby of the Fox Theater in San Jose. It is known for being the main place for Theatrical Arts International, the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, the Sinfonia Mexicana, Worldwide Theatricals and Inland Dance Theatre, Inc. The competition that the California Theatre has is the Redlands theatre because it’s an outdoor theatre, unlike the California Theatre. The California Theatre originally built as a vaudeville and movie theater which opened on August 15, 1928. It now serves a performance theatre in the Inland Empire.

Project Summary:

What intrigued me about the theatre was that it has been open since 1928 and it still has its original organ. I want to show more of sophisticated look and feel to the website especially since it is a theatre.

Target Audience:

The target audience is people over the age of 30. Anyone under the age of 30 tends to watch movies or tv shows rather than sit down and watch a performance. People who love the arts, as in music, and theatre. Based on the California Theatre’s Facebook page the people who interact on that page are over 30.

Desired Message:

I want the viewer to have a simple, cleaner feeling when navigating the website. Something that allows the viewer to not get confused when using the improved site. I want to give a somewhat minimalistic feel to the site while keeping the dark colors of the theatre.

Look and Feel:

I decided to use colors like yellow, greys, dark toned colors like maroon and off black to give a minimal feeling but incorporating the darkness of the theatre. Then, I added new pictures of the theatre so the viewer knows how the venue looks like from inside.
